Glitter may seem like a harmless bit of fun, and for some it's just a fashion trend -
but do you really know the facts?
This blog post is about microplastics, why they are harmful to the environment, how we can make a difference, and why we've moved to biodegradable glitter.
Even though glitter is only a small part of the problem, after reading this we hope your love of glitter can be fulfilled without plastic.
About microplastics:
There has being a growing concern about microplastics and the way they have an impact on the environment – for example, our oceans.
Plastics contaminate the marine environment and fish have been documented eating these plastics.
Scary thought right?
Legislation has been passed in some countries banning plastic microbeads in products like shower gels and the UK will be bringing in a new legislation in 2017 which includes any plastic in rinse off cosmetics under 5mm.
We’re proud to say that we have
never used plastic microbeads in our shower gels or scrubs. We strongly believe that neither animals, humans nor the environment should suffer for our luxuries.
B’s Fact: Any scrub agents we use are naturally derived from ingredients such as
ground nut shells, sugar or sea salts.
A number of years ago we identified plastic based glitter as a concern but at the time there weren’t any suitable alternatives. We use glitter on a number of our products and we wanted to make sure that we aren’t releasing microplastics into the environment.
Because it’s not just bunnies who are hunnies, but also fishies too.
We are now working with the largest glitter producers in the UK, and are pleased that as of September 2016 we moved all of our glitters to a new technology based on glitters made from a special regenerated Cellulose.
About glitters made from Cellulose:
The special regenerated cellulose used in Bio-glitter is
unique and the most biodegradable and
compostable form of cellulose film available*. This complies with the European and American standards for compostable materials.
The special regenerated cellulose is made from
Eucalyptus tree extract which is then metallised with a thin layer of aluminium. The Eucalyptus is harvested to FSC standards so you can be sure the wood is sourced responsibly and sustainably
The best part? They are
marine and waste water biodegradable!
Another benefit of Bio-Glitter:
- Bio-Glitter is very soft compared to polyester. This means it will be much more comfortable on your skin.
